You can’t make penalty and interest payments by EFT. Previous year amendments can also be completed for free, but will need to be mailed in as the IRS does not accept e-filed returns for years that have passed. It does not cost anything to fill in and mail a tax amendment. Generally, if the original return understated your tax bill by only a small amount, your tax advisor will recommend that you amend your return and pay the additional taxes, interest and penalties as soon as possible. The Department may assess a penalty for failure to file a return in addition to a penalty for failure to pay. However, we will not assess multiple penalties for failing to pay.<\/p>\n

From the financial year 2021 onwards, the income tax department has reduced the maximum amount of penalty for late filing of returns to Rs 5,000 from Rs. 10,000.<\/br><\/br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
Amended returns requesting a refund must be filed within the statute of limitations for refunds. The Treasury regulations, in effect, provide a \u201csafe harbor\u201d that allows a taxpayer to avoid tax penalties. A qualified amended return must, by definition, be filed before the IRS begins an investigation of the taxpayer or the promoter of a transaction in which the taxpayer participated. Nonresident and part-year resident taxpayers who are required to file a federal individual income tax return are required to file a Louisiana income tax return, IT-540B, reporting all income earned from Louisiana sources. The calculation for the IT-540Brequires that a taxpayer report all income from all sources in order to determine a ratio of Louisiana adjusted gross income to Federal adjusted gross income.<\/p>\n
